Ellie was so done with the misery in her life. She began spilling her heart out on the paper.
“Dear Lenny,
I’m writing to you again on my birthday. I really miss you. I always think about our jokes and games. But now, I don’t play much anymore. Carl doesn’t let me go outside, and I have to stay in my room. Please take me away from here. I don’t want to live with Carl anymore. Since Mom is gone, he’s been so mean… I want to run far away. I’ll be waiting for your response.
I love you, Ellie”
Ellie tucked the letter addressed “To My Dear Lenny in Heaven” into an envelope and posted it in the mailbox. She hoped, somehow, her letter would reach her late brother in the great beyond.
Days went by. Ellie tried to hold onto the tiny hope that her message would be received, even if it seemed impossible. One day, as she was returning from school, she found an envelope addressed to her. “To Dear Ellie,” read the words on the envelope. Her heart raced, and she hastily tore it open. The words she read were unbelievable, and her eyes filled with tears.
“Dear Ellie,
I miss you too. I’m always watching over you. I’m sorry Carl has been so mean. You need to stay strong and be brave. I know it’s hard, but remember, you are not alone. There’s someone out there who cares about you. Look for a sign, and you will find a friend who will help you. Trust in yourself, Ellie. You can overcome this
With all my love,
Lenny”
Ellie couldn’t believe her eyes. Her brother had somehow sent her a letter from heaven. She felt a renewed sense of hope and courage filling her heart. She realized she wasn’t as alone as she had felt, and she decided to look for that sign Lenny mentioned.
The very next day, as she sat alone at lunch, a new girl approached her. “Hi, I’m Sam,” she said with a friendly smile. “Mind if I sit with you?”
Ellie nodded, feeling a strange warmth in her heart. “Sure, Sam. I’d like that.”
As they chatted, Ellie learned that Sam had recently moved to town and was looking for friends. They quickly bonded over shared interests and laughter. Ellie felt a sense of relief wash over her, believing Sam might be the friend her brother had promised.
As the weeks passed, Sam’s friendship brought light back into Ellie’s life. With Sam’s support, Ellie found the courage to speak up about Carl’s behavior to a trusted teacher. The authorities stepped in, and Ellie was placed with a kind foster family who genuinely cared for her well-being.
Ellie continued to write letters to Lenny, thanking him for the miracle he had sent her. Each time she posted a letter, she felt a little closer to him, knowing that he was always watching over her.
In the end, Ellie realized that love and hope could bridge even the greatest of distances, and she found the strength to create a better life for herself, guided by the memory of her beloved brother.
