My Brother Thinks I’m Free Babysitter to His 3 Kids, Constantly Ruins My Plans

I have a brother with three kids: a 5-year-old girl and 3-year-old twins. He thinks I am a free babysitter, so he and his wife would just drop off their kids at my door and leave. But the last straw was when I was hanging out with my friends. My brother called me to say he was coming to leave the kids with me. I told him I wasn’t home. He just laughed and said I had to cancel my plans. I was dumbfounded to discover he had just abandoned the kids alone at my door.

To teach him a lesson, I called the police.

As soon as I saw the missed call notification from my brother, I had a bad feeling. When I called him back, he casually told me that the kids were at my place, even though I had made it clear I wasn’t home. Panic and anger surged through me as I imagined the three young children alone on my doorstep.

I immediately called my friends, told them I had an emergency, and rushed back home. The sight that greeted me made my heart ache. There they were, sitting on my front steps, looking confused and scared. I quickly gathered them inside, trying to calm them down and reassure them.
But I knew this couldn’t go on. My brother’s irresponsibility had reached an unacceptable level. It wasn’t just inconvenient—it was dangerous. I decided I needed to take action that would make him realize the seriousness of his behavior.

After making sure the kids were settled with some snacks and their favorite TV show, I stepped outside and dialed 911. I explained the situation to the dispatcher, emphasizing the abandonment and the danger it posed to the children. Within minutes, a police officer arrived.

I explained everything to the officer, showing him the text messages and call logs from my brother. The officer took down all the details and assured me they would handle it. I felt a mix of relief and anxiety, knowing this would escalate quickly but hoping it would make my brother understand the gravity of his actions.

Not long after, my brother called me, furious.

Brother: “What the hell, Sarah? The cops are here! What did you do?”

Me: “I did what I had to do, Mark. You left your kids alone at my door when I told you I wasn’t home. This has to stop. You can’t treat me like a free babysitter and put your kids in danger.”

Brother: “I can’t believe you called the cops on me! You could have just taken them in and let me know!”

Me: “That’s the problem, Mark. You don’t listen! This is the only way you’ll understand how serious this is.”

There was a tense silence on the other end of the line. Then, I heard him sigh.

Brother: “I didn’t think… I just… I’m sorry, Sarah. I didn’t realize it was that bad.

Me: “Well, now you know. I love my nieces and nephew, but you can’t keep doing this. You need to respect my time and ensure your kids are safe.”

The police spoke to my brother and issued a stern warning about child abandonment. They didn’t press charges, but the scare was enough to make him rethink his actions. He apologized profusely and promised to never leave the kids like that again.

Since that incident, things have changed. My brother and his wife now plan ahead and ask if I’m available before assuming I’ll babysit. They also found a reliable local sitter for times when I’m not available. It took drastic measures, but they finally understood the importance of responsible parenting and respecting my boundaries.

In the end, it was a tough lesson for everyone involved, but it brought about a necessary change. The kids are safe, and I can enjoy my time without unexpected responsibilities being dumped on me.
