Cop Responds to 911 Call and Finds Mom of Four Unable to Feed Her Baby

“911, what’s your emergency?”

“Hello,” Amanda said, almost breathless. She had been walking around the house for nearly an hour, trying to soothe her crying child. “I need help. My child won’t stop crying because I cannot give him milk. Can you please have someone help me?” she asked

“Are you in any kind of danger, ma’am?” the dispatcher asked.
“No, but I might as well be if my baby doesn’t stop crying. Please, please, can you quickly send someone over with some formula milk?” Amanda pleaded, sounding desperate.

The dispatcher was alarmed at the sudden call. She tried to decipher whether “formula milk” was some code for danger and wanted to ensure that the mom and her children were safe, so she dispatched a policeman to do a wellness check on the address.

Officer Daniels arrived at Amanda’s house within ten minutes. He knocked on the door, and Amanda opened it, her face flushed and her eyes red from crying. In her arms, she held her wailing infant.

“Ma’am, are you Amanda?” Officer Daniels asked, his tone gentle but firm.

“Yes, yes, please come in,” Amanda replied, stepping aside to let him enter.

Officer Daniels looked around the small living room, noting the clutter and the signs of a struggling young mother. “I received a call that you needed formula milk for your baby?”

Amanda nodded, her eyes filling with tears. “I ran out of formula, and I don’t have any money to buy more. I’ve been trying to breastfeed, but I just can’t produce enough milk. My baby is so hungry, and I don’t know what to do.”

Officer Daniels’ heart softened. “It’s going to be okay, ma’am. We’ll get you some help.”

He radioed back to the dispatcher, explaining the situation. Within minutes, another officer arrived with a few cans of formula milk they had picked up on the way. Amanda’s relief was palpable as she mixed the formula and fed her baby, who immediately quieted down and began to drink greedily.

“Thank you, thank you so much,” Amanda said, tears streaming down her face as she looked at the officers.

“We’re glad we could help,” Officer Daniels replied. “But Amanda, it’s important to reach out for support. Do you have family or friends nearby who can assist you?”

Amanda shook her head. “I moved here recently, and I don’t know anyone yet. My husband is deployed overseas, and it’s just been so hard.”

Officer Daniels nodded. “I understand. We’ll make sure you get connected with some local resources that can help you through this tough time. You don’t have to do this alone.”

Over the next few days, with the help of the police department’s community outreach program, Amanda was connected with a local food bank, a support group for military spouses, and a neighborhood mother-and-baby group. She received the emotional and practical support she desperately needed.

As weeks passed, Amanda settled into a routine. The crying bouts became less frequent as her baby thrived on the new formula. She made friends with other mothers, sharing experiences and tips, and found solace in the community she had once felt so isolated from.

One evening, as she prepared her baby’s bottle, she thought back to that desperate night when she had called 911. She realized how close she had come to a breaking point and how the simple act of asking for help had changed everything.

With a smile, Amanda kissed her baby’s forehead. “We’ve got this,” she whispered. “Thanks to a little help from some kind strangers.”
