My MIL offered me $10k to leave her son. I decided to outplay her.
My future mother-in-law, Susan, made it clear from the start that she thought I, a nurse, wasn’t good enough for her family. When Mark and I got engaged, she tried to break us up for months, telling me to go back to where I belonged. She was pretty nasty to me, but she hid it well from others.
As our wedding day approached, Susan got desperate. One evening, she cornered me in the kitchen while Mark was out. “I have an offer for you,” she said, her voice dripping with condescension. “Leave my son, and I’ll give you $10,000. You can go start a new life somewhere else. It’s for the best.”
I was sick of her meddling and decided it was my chance to play by my rules. I looked at her, pretending to consider the offer. “Alright, I’ll accept your offer,” I said, my voice steady. Her eyes widened in surprise, but she quickly composed herself and pulled out a checkbook.
“Good. Take this and be gone before the wedding,” she said, handing me the check.
I took the check, thanked her, and left. But I had no intention of leaving Mark. Instead, I went to a lawyer the next day and set up a trust fund for our future children with the $10,000. I also made sure the lawyer prepared a document that detailed the whole transaction, just in case.
On the wedding day, Susan was all smiles, thinking she had succeeded. Mark and I exchanged vows, and everything went smoothly. After the ceremony, during the reception, I pulled Susan aside.
“Thank you for the generous gift,” I said, handing her a copy of the trust fund documents and the lawyer’s statement.
Her face turned pale as she read the documents. “You… you tricked me!” she stammered.
“No, Susan. I accepted your offer, and I used the money to ensure a better future for your grandchildren. And now, I have proof of what you did,” I said calmly. “So, if you ever try to interfere in our lives again, I won’t hesitate to show this to Mark.”
She was livid but had no choice but to accept defeat. From that day forward, she kept her distance and never tried to meddle in our relationship again.
Mark and I had a wonderful wedding and an even better life together. And every time I looked at our children’s trust fund, I couldn’t help but smile, knowing that I had outplayed Susan and turned her attempt to break us up into a gift for our future.
