Joaquin Phoenix recently made headlines after he refused to participate in a candid film project shortly before filming began. Although the actor has remained silent on the matter for the most part, reports indicate a possible reason for his sudden departure.
In an interview given in May 2023, director Todd Haines revealed that he and actor Joaquin Phoenix had a gay affair with Jonathan Raymond. Haines mentioned that this project will be his next film.
“The next feature film is an original script that I developed with Joaquin Phoenix based on some thoughts and ideas that he shared with me. We mostly worked with him as a story writer. John Raymond, Joaquin, and I share the authorship of this story,” Haines shared.
Known for his extreme roles, Phoenix inspired Haines to take on bold, adult themes. Haines recalled the influence of the movie star, stating: “Joaquin pushed me further and said: “No, let’s move on.”
Haines explained that the script was developed through an organic and collaborative process, and the Oscar winner pushed the project into riskier territory, especially in terms of sexual content.
Haynes described the film as a historical picture set in 1930s Los Angeles. The film was supposed to be about a gay love story.
Speaking at the American premiere of “May December” in September 2023, Haines told fans about the progress of work on the film. He shared that they finished working on the script immediately after the filming of “May December” and before the strike in the industry.
Haines thanked Phoenix for inspiring the project, praising him for his “courage” and willingness to “overcome barriers.” He noted that the Golden Globe Award winner’s desire to explore the unpleasant aspects of the relationship played a central role in the development of the plot.
