One day, I came home and faced a terrifying situation — my son Joel didn’t recognize me. Not only did he not call me “Mommy,” but he also thought I was a strange woman, yelling, “You, not Mommy!” Even when my mom, who had been babysitting Joel lately, came out and addressed me as her daughter, it didn’t help the situation.
My heart was broken when my son said, “You… not Mommy! Mommy was beautiful!” So I was beautiful, and now I’m not? I knew something was wrong and was determined to find out why. From that day on, I tried to talk to Joel about things we’d done together before, cooking him his favorite foods. But it was all in vain.
Each day became a painful reminder of my son’s confusion. I would show him photos of us together, recount memories of fun times we had shared, and even wore my hair and makeup the way he used to like. Despite all my efforts, Joel remained distant and confused.
Until one day, he came up and gave me a flower, saying, “Mommy! This is for you!”
I almost fell off my chair and asked him, “Wait! You called me Mommy! Joel! Do you remember who I am now?”
His response surprised me. He just said, “Oops!” And then he told me a story that turned my world upside down.
“Mommy told me not to talk to the other lady,” Joel began, looking at the floor, a mix of guilt and fear in his eyes.
Confused, I pressed on, “What do you mean, Joel? What other lady?”
Joel looked up at me, his small face serious. “She comes when you go to work. She looks like you but says she’s my real mommy and that I should forget about you.”
A cold shiver ran down my spine. Someone had been coming into my home, pretending to be me, and manipulating my son. I had to find out who this imposter was and put a stop to it immediately.
Over the next few days, I took time off work to observe what was happening in my house. I set up a hidden camera in the living room to capture any interactions when I wasn’t around. My mom, who had been babysitting Joel, was just as shocked as I was and promised to help me get to the bottom of this.
A few days later, while reviewing the footage, I saw her — a woman who bore a striking resemblance to me, entering the house and interacting with Joel. My heart raced as I watched her hug my son, whispering things I couldn’t hear. She was meticulous, ensuring she didn’t leave any evidence of her visits.
I showed the footage to my mom, who was horrified. We decided to confront this woman the next time she came. The following day, I stayed home, hiding in the closet near the front door, ready to confront the imposter.
When she arrived, I waited until she was inside and interacting with Joel. Stepping out of my hiding place, I confronted her, “Who are you, and what are you doing with my son?”
She turned to face me, her eyes wide with shock. “I… I didn’t mean any harm,” she stammered.
“Didn’t mean any harm?” I echoed, anger boiling within me. “You’ve been confusing my son and making him think I’m not his mother!”
She looked down, ashamed. “I’m sorry. I lost my son a year ago. He looked so much like Joel. When I saw him, I just… I just wanted to feel like a mom again.”
Her confession hit me hard. The anger in me was replaced with a mix of pity and understanding. Losing a child was a pain I couldn’t imagine. But she couldn’t continue this way.
“You need to leave now and never come back,” I said firmly. “I understand your pain, but you can’t replace your son with mine. Joel is confused and scared. You have to go.”
She nodded, tears streaming down her face. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered before turning and leaving my house.
After she left, I hugged Joel tightly, reassuring him that I was his real mommy and that the other lady wouldn’t be coming back. Over the next few weeks, Joel and I worked together to rebuild our bond. Gradually, he began to trust me again and call me “Mommy” without hesitation.
Though the experience had been traumatic, it taught me the importance of vigilance and communication with my child. Joel’s love for me grew stronger, and our bond became unbreakable, built on trust and understanding. We moved forward, leaving the confusion and fear behind, stronger than ever before.
