Jason Hughes<\/strong>\u00a0was the type of teacher known for going above and beyond for his students. It was also known that this time of year was maybe one of his favorites, a former student exclusively told\u00a0Us Weekly<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoach Hughes always got excited about this time of year,\u201d said\u00a0Sheyden Maynor<\/strong>, who graduated from North Hall High School in Gainesville, Georgia. \u201cHe thought it was fun.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a well-known game among teachers and students around this time of year. It\u2019s called junior-senior wars,\u201d Maynor, 22, said about the game called \u201cRolling Trees,\u201d which involves toilet-papering.<\/p>\n

He explained to\u00a0Us<\/em>\u00a0that the game is based on a point system: one point to the student if they roll another student\u2019s house, two points if they roll a teacher\u2019s or coach\u2019s house and 3 points for an administrator\u2019s house.<\/p>\n

\u201c[It] can\u2019t be cars or mailboxes, just houses and trees. No eggs, no paintball guns,\u201d he continued, adding he also participated in the game during high school.<\/p>\n

Hughes, who taught math to freshman, sophomore, and junior students at the high school and served as the golf team\u2019s coach, was killed in a freak accident on Friday, March 6.<\/p>\n

A group of five\u00a0students showed up outside his home to stream rolls of toilet paper\u00a0onto his house and into the trees in his yard. Hughes, 40, tried catching the students as they sprinted to their cars. As Hughes neared the street, he either tripped or lost his footing and fell into the street where one of the cars ran him over.<\/p>\n

\"High<\/p>\n

The five students stopped to help Hughes and now face criminal charges for their roles in the fatal prank. However,\u00a0Hughes\u2019 wife has started a petition, seeking the dismissal of the charges,\u00a0realizing what happened was an unfortunate accident.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was not a malicious act,\u201d Maynor said, adding he has reached out to\u00a0Laura Hughes<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Jason\u2019s wife, who is also a teacher at the high school \u2014 to offer his condolences. \u201cIt was just a tragic accident.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maynor was using Snapchat when he heard the news and was in a state of disbelief when he looked up the news reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just talked a few weeks prior,\u201d Maynor explained. \u201cWe were catching up on things, his life, my life. He was doing good. I went to a football game in December and saw him. He was on the field. We had a cordial conversation. We kept in contact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Added Maynor: \u201cI never saw him mad. He was a great guy all the way around.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Teacher<\/p>\n

Last fall, Maynor was in a serious relationship, with his mind set on a proposal. But the woman ended up breaking his heart while he was on a hunting trip in a different state. Distraught, Maynor knew who he could turn to: Coach Hughes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was bawling my eyes out and didn\u2019t think make it through [the rest of the trip],\u201d he said. \u201cI was so upset. He was busy doing something but still stayed on the phone with me [for] one and half, two hours just talking to me, even though he was busy and helping me through this. He was a very Christian man, and he was a good servant to the Lord. He told me, \u2018The Lord can help you \u2014 you just got to start praying.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He even recalled a group message Hughes sent to a group of students he worked with, saying he was available if ever they needed him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe would make time for anyone \u2014 for his students and a stranger,\u201d Maynor said. \u201cYou have some good teachers and bad teachers, coach was one of those who touched your heart, he was a kind man and down to earth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maynor said he will miss \u201call the good times we had,\u201d and said that he\u2019s grateful to have had the opportunity to know Hughes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be hard not having that rock to lean on if I need someone to talk to or to go do something with,\u201d he confided.<\/p>\n

Sheyden\u2019s mom,\u00a0Carol Lancaster<\/strong>, told\u00a0Us<\/em>\u00a0that Hughes \u201cwas one of a kind\u201d and someone her son \u201ccould always depend on. He loved his students with all he had and wanted them to succeed. \u2026 He has certainly left a void in our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maynor said he hadn\u2019t heard of anyone getting hurt before Hughes\u2019 death but believes the future of the school pranking tradition may be in jeopardy, given the tragic circumstances: \u201cI do think something is going to change about it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
