I told them gently: \u201cI\u2019m done covering for you. Rent, car insurance, overdraft fees\u2014you\u2019ll have to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

My daughter cried, then asked if we could still get coffee every week. My son\u2026 laughed. Laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait, are you having a midlife crisis?\u201d I said no, just a self-respect revival.<\/p>\n

His tone shifted fast, \u201cYou know I need help right now. You\u2019re seriously abandoning me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Three weeks later, I went to drop off a box of his old stuff at his place. He opened the door, his new girlfriend beside him, and just said, \u201cOh. It\u2019s her. The useless one.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t speak. Just set the box down, turned around, and left.<\/p>\n

Now I sit on my porch each morning with coffee, I don\u2019t rush. The silence used to ache. Now, it\u2019s my reward.<\/p>\n

I gave them everything. The moment I said \u201cno,\u201d I stopped being Mom and became a villain.<\/p>\n

Still, I\u2019d choose peace over performing motherhood-as-a-service again.<\/p>\n
