Sources told ABC News that Siebert and other career prosecutors found\u00a0no clear proof James knowingly committed mortgage fraud<\/strong>, yet Trump officials pressured Siebert to pursue charges.<\/p>\n

Trump himself\u00a0acknowledged his uncertainty<\/strong>\u00a0in September, saying:<\/p>\n

Prosecutors claim James\u00a0misled a bank<\/strong>\u00a0to secure better loan terms by falsely stating that a property would be her primary residence, while allegedly planning to rent it out for profit.<\/p>\n

However, sources told ABC News that after\u00a0a five-month investigation<\/strong>\u00a0and interviews with over a dozen witnesses, prosecutors\u00a0found no clear evidence<\/strong>\u00a0of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

Halligan defended the case, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one is above the law. The charges represent intentional criminal acts and serious breaches of the public\u2019s trust. The facts and the law are clear, and we will follow them to ensure justice is served.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Wider Context: Pattern of Pressure<\/h3>\n

Last month, Halligan also indicted\u00a0James Comey<\/strong>\u00a0on charges related to false statements and obstruction concerning his 2020 Senate testimony, following Trump\u2019s public demand for immediate prosecutions of Comey, James, and Senator Adam Schiff.<\/p>\n

Trump publicly pressured the Justice Department on social media:<\/p>\n
