When I got to the hotel, I parked half a block away, heart pounding. I didn\u2019t even know what I was hoping to find. Maybe it was fraud. Maybe someone stole his identity.<\/p>\n

She looked over her shoulder like someone might be watching and then stepped out fully. Her hair was curly and tied into a messy bun. She wore an oversized sweatshirt that didn\u2019t look like hers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw him leave a few hours ago,\u201d she said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t look dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

I just stared. My throat felt dry.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know who you think you saw\u2014my husband is\u00a0dead<\/em>,\u201d I said, more firmly than I felt.<\/p>\n

Inside, the room was a mess. Two takeout containers. A duffel bag. And a\u00a0photo of my husband on the nightstand<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t touch anything,\u201d she said quickly. \u201cI came in here to clean. I work part-time. When I saw the photo, I recognized him. He was here last week, too. With another woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was arrested on multiple counts\u2014fraud, conspiracy, and even fake death declaration.<\/p>\n
