A Minnesota couple said their family experienced a \u201cmiracle\u201d after their son survived a terrifying freak accident
\nParents Dave and Abby Deterding said an arrow traveled almost all the way through their son Gus\u2019 skull when he fell on it \u2014 and the 9-year-old pulled it out by himself
\nA doctor told the Deterdings that if the arrow had struck Gus at just a slightly different angle, \u201cthat would have been death within minutes\u201d
\nA Minnesota couple says their family experienced a \u201cmiracle\u201d after their 9-year-old son pulled an arrow out of his face \u2014 and escaped unharmed.<\/p>\n

Speaking with local outlet KARE 11, parents Dave and Abby Deterding recalled the moment back in March when their son, Gus, came to them panicking and bleeding after he fell and slipped in their icy driveway while trying to pack some items in their truck \u2014 including a youth bow and arrow.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was carrying everything at once,\u201d Abby recalled, \u201cAnd he fell right on it. I was vacuuming downstairs, and Dave was getting dressed, and [Gus] came in, in a panic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had a very small cut on his head,\u201d Dave told the outlet, as Abby remembered that Gus had \u201ca lot of blood\u201d on his face.<\/p>\n

According to the Deterdings, they didn\u2019t realize the extent of their son\u2019s injuries in that moment, and instead tried to ease his concerns about what had happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe kept saying. \u2018Mom, am I dying, am I going to leave you? I don\u2019t want to leave you yet,\u2019 \u201d Abby told KARE 11. \u201cAnd I\u2019m like, \u2018Gus, no, we\u2019re just getting stitches.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

While the couple initially took their son to Alexandria hospital, a concerned emergency room doctor called for Gus to be transported to the larger Children\u2019s Minnesota Hospital, according to KARE 11.<\/p>\n

The 9-year-old was initially sent home from the hospital without incident, but it wasn\u2019t until Gus started vomiting and the Deterdings brought him back for a second time that doctors realized something incredible had happened.<\/p>\n

Dr. Ken Maslonka told the outlet that the arrow had traveled nearly all the way through Gus\u2019 brain, and the 9-year-old pulled it back out himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe looked too normal,\u201d Maslonka said. \u201cI would say in the 28 years I\u2019ve been at Children\u2019s of Minnesota, I\u2019ve never seen anything like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doctors moved quickly to take scans of Gus\u2019 brain, and they found that a small piece of his skull had been pushed into his brain by the impact of the arrow, which the Deterdings believe Gus was carrying tucked under his armpit, pointing up toward his head, when he fell.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt literally took my breath away and I felt, like, sick to my stomach,\u201d Abby said, recalling the first moment she saw her son\u2019s brain scan. \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe it, \u2018No, that far, what?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHad it hit that, that would have been death within minutes,\u201d Maslonka said, referring to a carotid artery, extremely close to where the arrow had been in Gus\u2019 brain.<\/p>\n

According to Maslonka, the arrow been just two centimeters away from exiting Gus\u2019 skull. But three months later, Gus is back to his usual self, playing hockey with his siblings and going back to baseball practice with the rest of his team.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is as normal as he was beforehand,\u201d the doctor said. \u201cIt\u2019s either fortune, at a minimum, or it\u2019s heavenly presence of God controlling the direction of that arrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for the Deterdings, they shared that Gus hasn\u2019t wanted to speak about the incident at length yet. \u201cWe\u2019ve never really pressed him on talking about it, but maybe someday,\u201d his father told KARE 11.<\/p>\n

The 9-year-old\u2019s parents now have just one explanation for what happened that day in March.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know it didn\u2019t just happen,\u201d Dave acknowledged.
