\nDuring his visit on July 1, Trump didn\u2019t hold back on the facility\u2019s harsh reality. \u201cSnakes are fast but alligators \u2014 we\u2019re going to teach them how to run away from an alligator,\u201d he told reporters, demonstrating with a hand gesture, \u201cDon\u2019t run in a straight line. Run like this.\u201d The chilling advice came as a stark warning to migrants who could soon find themselves trapped inside the detention center.<\/p>\n

The president openly acknowledged the camp\u2019s controversial nature, calling it \u201ca little controversial\u201d but shrugging off criticism.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt might be as good as the real Alcatraz,\u201d he added, referring to the notorious former prison outside San Fransisco known for housing America\u2019s most dangerous criminals. A prison that Trump, by the way, wants to reopen.<\/p>\n

Trump toured Alligator Alcatraz alongside Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, who all proudly defended the facility, despite growing public outcry comparing it to a Nazi-style internment camp rather than a migrant detention center.<\/p>\n

Indigenous leaders not happy
\nProtests erupted as locals stood in the rain outside the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport \u2014 the camp\u2019s location \u2014 to voice their opposition to what they see as an inhumane approach to immigration.<\/p>\n

Indigenous leaders have also spoken out against the state\u2019s plan to build the detention center on their ancestral lands. Native American communities have deep roots in this region, dating back thousands of years.<\/p>\n

For centuries, the vast wetlands of present-day South Florida have been home to Native peoples, including the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma.<\/p>\n

Miccosukee Chairman Talbert Cypress emphasized the significance of the land, saying, \u201cRather than Miccosukee homelands being an uninhabited wasteland for alligators and pythons, as some have suggested, the Big Cypress is the Tribe\u2019s traditional homelands. The landscape has protected the Miccosukee and Seminole people for generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Will the alligators really act as camp guards?
\nGarrett Stuart, who lives just three miles from the site, described Big Cypress\u2019s crystal-clear waters, open prairies, and lush tree islands as bursting with wildlife.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo suggest that alligators and pythons can act as security guards is something only someone who\u2019s never spent time in the swamp would say,\u201d Stuart told AP and added: \u201cThose animals are afraid of humans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Backing the president was right-wing commentator Benny Johnson, who gleefully filmed a selfie-style video calling the place a \u201cJurassic Park\u201d and bragged about asking Trump questions live on TV.<\/p>\n

Johnson\u2019s cruel remarks about the camp shocked many: \u201cYou go in and you don\u2019t come out. And if you do, the alligators get you.\u201d Wearing \u201cofficial Alligator Alcatraz merch\u201d \u2014 funded by Florida\u2019s Attorney General James Uthmeier \u2014 Johnson celebrated the camp as part of Trump\u2019s \u201cmass deportation agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nDespite the controversy, Trump used the visit to squash old beef with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, praising his swift efforts to get the facility operational in just eight days. \u201cRon worked beautifully with Kristi and all the people at Homeland Security and got it done in how many days, Ron?\u201d Trump asked, with DeSantis replying, \u201cEight days, a new facility was up and running.\u201d<\/p>\n

Set to house up to 3,000 migrants initially \u2014 with plans to expand to 5,000 \u2014 the state-run complex is built on a former airfield and surrounded by deadly swamp creatures, ensuring there\u2019s no easy escape.<\/p>\n
