Barack Obama has warned that Donald Trump\u2019s leadership poses a threat to the United States.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amid a contentious national discussion about immigration raids and deportations, Obama delivered a speech Tuesday night at the Bushnell Performing Arts Centre in Hartford, Connecticut, criticising existing federal government tactics.<\/p>\n

He started by raising concerns about a troubling decline in America\u2019s adherence to democratic principles.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you follow regularly what is said by those who are in charge of the federal government right now, there is a weak commitment to what we understood \u2013 and not just my generation, at least since World War II \u2013 our understanding of how a liberal democracy is supposed to work,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Obama said, according to\u00a0Connecticut Public Radio<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He underlined the significance of opposition from both government officials and civil society.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere has to be a response and pushback from civil society, from various institutions and individuals outside of government, but there also have to be people in government in both parties who say, \u2018No, you can\u2019t do that,\u2019\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is consistent with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n. It\u2019s consistent with places that hold elections but do not otherwise observe what we think of as a fair system in which everybody\u2019s voice matters and people have a seat at the table and nobody\u2019s above the law,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Obama warned, cautioning that America, while not fully authoritarian, is veering in a dangerous direction.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not there yet completely, but I think that we are dangerously close to normalizing behavior like that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

A key concern for Obama was the growing divide over truth itself.\u00a0\u201cIn 2020, one person won the election, and it wasn\u2019t the guy complaining about it,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he reminded, referring to President Trump\u2019s false claims of election fraud.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that\u2019s just a fact, just like my inauguration had more people\u2026 I don\u2019t care, but facts are important.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He further noted the peril when partisans cling to falsehoods regardless of evidence:\u00a0\u201cIn one of our major political parties, you have a whole bunch of people who know that\u2019s not true but will pretend like it is. And that is dangerous.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Independent<\/a>, this scathing criticism mimicked past scandals, as when Trump\u2019s first press secretary, Sean Spicer, asserted that his inauguration had\u00a0\u201cthe largest crowd in history,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0despite overwhelming photographic and scientific proof to the contrary.<\/p>\n

Obama responded with a message of hope when asked how to remain upbeat in the face of escalating political tensions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m still optimistic \u2013 I\u2019m still the \u2018hope\u2019 guy,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said. Highlighting the need for collective action, he urged Americans to be\u00a0\u201cimpatient with injustice and cruelty,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>but also to build alliances and coalitions:\u00a0\u201cIf you want to deliver on change, then it\u2019s a game of addition, not subtraction,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he advised.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to find ways to make common ground with people who don\u2019t agree with you on everything but agree with you on some things.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
