The Kennedy Center set the stage for \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d on June 11 but the real revolution unfolded in the audience where President Donald Trump was in attendance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just days before his 79th<\/sup>\u00a0birthday,\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0and First Lady Melania Trump appeared at the Kennedy Center for the performance of \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables,\u201d a musical that explores themes of injustice, poverty and revolution against a \u201ctyrannical king.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve seen it many times, it\u2019s one of my favorites,\u201d Trump said, per\u00a0Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Kennedy Center is coming back. It was not properly taken care of, and we are taking it back and we are going to turn it back into something great.\u201d<\/p>\n

The President\u2019s attendance marks his first return to the theater since he controversially fired much of its leadership and promised to rid the institution of what he called its \u201cwoke\u201d programming.<\/p>\n

\u201cNO MORE\u00a0DRAG<\/a>\u00a0SHOWS, OR OTHER ANTI-AMERICAN PROPAGANDA,\u201d he wrote in a\u00a0Truth Social<\/a>\u00a0post on February 10.<\/p>\n

Staged boycott<\/h2>\n

But in the days leading up to the show,\u00a0CNN<\/a>\u00a0confirmed that some cast members of \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d planned to boycott the performance in protest of Trump\u2019s attendance. The production reportedly gave the cast the option to bow out of that evening\u2019s show, and several key performers, including lead actors and ensemble members, chose not to take the stage in what appeared to be a quiet yet powerful protest.<\/p>\n

When asked before the show about the public outcry, Trump said: \u201cI couldn\u2019t care less. Honestly, I couldn\u2019t. All I do is run the country well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Drag queens<\/h2>\n

And, according to\u00a0NPR<\/a>, some ticket-holders donated their seats to drag performers, adding another layer of defiant flair to the night.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was protest by taking up space,\u201d Tara Hoot, one of the attending queens, told the outlet. \u201cWe wanted to support the artists and bring attention to the drag ban at the Kennedy Center by showing up and being gorgeous.\u201d<\/p>\n
