There\u2019s no doubt that Barack Obama is not Donald Trump\u2019s biggest fan, but the former president\u2019s most recent dig at the White House\u2019s current occupant is the most brutal yet.The 44th POTUS has very different political views to Republican president Trump \u2013 so it\u2019s hardly a surprise Obama has called out Trump\u2019s policies on multiple occasions. \u201cI have deep differences of opinion with my most immediate successor \u2014 who\u2019s now president once again,\u201d Obama said during a speech at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a host of policies that we could be discussing where I have strong opinions,\u201d Obama continued, stating how he believes the government\u2019s commitment to strong principles has \u2018eroded\u2019.<\/p>\n

Since that speech, the education department has frozen a whopping $2.3 billion in federal funds to Harvard University after the famed college rejected a list of demands set out by the\u00a0Trump<\/a>\u00a0administration.<\/p>\n

The White House say the demands, which were sent to Harvard in a\u00a0letter<\/a>\u00a0last week, were designed to fight antisemitism on campus \u2013 with changes to hiring, admissions and teaching on the agenda.<\/p>\n

Essentially, the\u00a0educational<\/a>\u00a0institution would cede a large amount of control to the government if it had agreed to Trump\u2019s demands, which included points such as ensuring the university will \u2018make organizational changes to ensure full transparency and cooperation with all federal regulators\u2019 and urging the school to \u2018immediately shutter all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, offices, committees, positions, and initiatives, under whatever name, and stop all DEI-based policies\u2019.<\/p>\n

Harvard rejected the proposal on Monday (April 14), claiming the White House is trying to take \u2018control\u2019 of the college and the wider community.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough some of the demands outlined by the government are aimed at combating antisemitism, the majority represent direct governmental regulation of the \u2018intellectual conditions\u2019 at Harvard,\u201d Harvard president Alan Garber said.<\/p>\n

The former president wrote on Twitter: \u201cHarvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions \u2013 rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking concrete steps to make sure all students at Harvard can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let\u2019s hope other institutions follow suit.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to Havard\u2019s rejection, the Department of Education said: \u201cHarvard\u2019s statement today reinforces the troubling entitlement mindset that is endemic in our nation\u2019s most prestigious universities and colleges.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the letter, the Trump administration called for reforms on \u2018merit-based\u2019 admissions and hiring policies, as well as a ban on face masks, which appeared to be aimed at pro-Palestinian protesters on campus.<\/p>\n

Harvard has said it is taking measures to tackle antisemitism on campus, but that this wouldn\u2019t be achieved through \u2018assertions of power, unmoored from the law, to control teaching and learning at Harvard and to dictate how we operate\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
