I was shocked when my husband, Jake, handed me a schedule he\u2019d created to help me “become a better wife.” But rather than losing my temper, I decided to play along. What Jake didn\u2019t realize was that I was about to teach him a lesson that would make him rethink his approach to our marriage.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always been the more level-headed one in our relationship. Jake, sweet as he is, can get swept up in fads and ideas from random sources \u2014 like YouTube videos or new hobbies. But everything was fine until he met Steve, a colleague who was full of loud opinions and “advice” for anyone who\u2019d listen, especially about relationships. Steve, a perpetually single guy, seemed to have a lot to say about how married couples should behave, and Jake, unfortunately, was intrigued by his confidence.<\/p>\n

The sheer absurdity of it took me by surprise. This list was sexist and insulting on so many levels, I didn\u2019t know where to start. But instead of exploding, I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right, Jake,\u201d I said sweetly. \u201cI\u2019ll start tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jake beamed, thinking he\u2019d struck some sort of agreement. He had no idea what was coming next.<\/p>\n

The following day, I got to work \u2014 but not in the way he\u2019d expected. I sat down with my laptop, opened a new document, and titled it, *Jake\u2019s Plan for Becoming the Best Husband Ever*. If he thought he could hand me a schedule, I\u2019d show him just how much structure our lives could really handle.<\/p>\n

I began listing the things he expected of me. For the gym, I figured a personal trainer might be necessary to meet his standards. \u201c$1,200 for a personal trainer,\u201d I typed, laughing to myself. Then I calculated the cost of groceries \u2014 organic, free-range, the whole shebang. \u201c$700 per month for groceries,\u201d I wrote, and added a note about cooking classes.<\/p>\n

Next, I considered the financial cost of my time. Since I\u2019d need to quit my job to adhere to his absurd plan, I added: \u201c$75,000 per year to replace Lisa\u2019s salary as a full-time maid, chef, and personal assistant.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, just for good measure, I suggested he might need to build a “man cave” for his friends to hang out in. \u201c$50,000 to build a separate space so Jake\u2019s friends don\u2019t disrupt Lisa\u2019s new schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the time I finished, the list was a masterpiece \u2014 a ridiculous, eye-opening masterpiece. I printed it out and set it on the kitchen counter, waiting for Jake to come home.<\/p>\n

When he walked in, he was in a good mood \u2014 until he saw the paper. \u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d he asked, picking it up.<\/p>\n

I kept my face neutral. \u201cIt\u2019s just a little list I put together for you,\u201d I said sweetly. \u201cTo help you become the best husband ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jake chuckled, thinking I was playing along. But as he read through the numbers and realized the total cost, his face fell. \u201cWait\u2026 what is all this? $1,200 for a personal trainer? $700 a month for groceries? What the hell, Lisa?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you wanted me to wake up at 5 a.m., work out, cook, clean, and host your friends. I figured we should budget for all that,\u201d I said, arms crossed.<\/p>\n

His eyes widened in horror. \u201c$75,000 a year? You\u2019re quitting your job?!\u201d<\/p>\n

I shrugged. \u201cHow else am I supposed to follow your plan?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jake stood there, stunned, as the reality of his own demands hit him. He stammered, \u201cI\u2026 I didn\u2019t mean\u2026 I didn\u2019t realize\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

I let him off the hook with a sigh. \u201cJake, marriage isn\u2019t about lists or routines. It\u2019s about respect. And if you ever try to ‘fix’ me like this again, you\u2019ll be paying a lot more than what\u2019s on that paper.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence hung between us. Jake\u2019s face softened, and he sighed deeply. \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he muttered. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize how ridiculous it was. Steve made it sound so sensible, but now I see it\u2019s toxic. I\u2019ve been such a fool.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded. \u201cYes, you have. But, have you looked at Steve\u2019s life? What makes you think he knows anything about marriage?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jake\u2019s expression was a mix of embarrassment and realization. \u201cYou\u2019re right. He doesn\u2019t know anything. I got carried away.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled and suggested, \u201cNow, let\u2019s rip this up and go back to being equals.\u201d<\/p>\n

We tore up the list together, and for the first time in weeks, it felt like we were back on the same team.<\/p>\n
